The Borer of Bad News

The Emerald Ash Borer is here to stay.

Since its discovery twelve years ago in southeastern Michigan, the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has destroyed millions of trees as it made its way across the country and into Colorado in 2013. EAB is a wood-boring beetle from Asia that feeds and tunnels through weak ash trees at first, and then onto healthy ones to complete their feeding cycle. By the time syptoms show, it is too late to do anything but destroy the tree and isolate the the spread.

Adult beetles are metallic green and are about 1/2 inch long. After they lay their eggs, the larvae bore into the tree choking off the channels that supply nutrients for the trees survival. Untreated, the tree will die within two to three years.
